[M] Your attention, please. [message #287456] Di, 13 Juni 2006 19:49
Stacie Hanes
There's no one here I don't consider a friend, and some to whom I have
become quite close by e-mail correspondence. Even one real "significant
other."

I get frequent e-mail from some of these dear friends, and some of them
write less frequently.

There are people here I'd cross oceans to meet, and people who, though we're
not close contribute a lot of the fun to my life.

I am afraid this reeks of grandstanding, and I loathe doing it. I have been
trying to avoid it, but it looks to me like we all know who is at the center
of the current "Temple."

Of course I encouraged it to some degree. The attention was warm and fun,
and some of the participants produced real humorous gems. Orjan's poem, the
mango spider, the clock spider, Graycat's spider--oddly, the damnable
spiders have been what have made my day sometimes. Go figure.

A remarkable number of people, even from the ranks of the usually quite
serious, have participated. Not only did I not want to rain on anyone's
parade, I enjoyed it.

Except there was a point, fairly recently, when it all reached critical
mass. I have been trying to play it a little cooler for several months, but
that didn't quite do the job. Thoughts of going incognito bore limited
fruit; Traci pointed out that it would be hard for me to hide, and recent
experiments have shown that there apparently *is* some sort of "stacie vibe"
that I give off.

I've been carrying on conversations of varying depths and lengths with
afpers old and new, conservative and less so. Heh, the lurkers support me in
email, but never mind that--the difference between the poster and her online
persona has been called to my attention, and I want to comment. What I
appear to be, here, is a caricature of my real self. None of it is
inaccurate, but some of it is exaggerated. The whip collection is real, the
leather is real, the arachnophobia is real, and so on.

I don't bear any ill feelings toward anyone who's flirted with me, or
participated in . . . whatever this is. It's no single person's doing, which
makes it hard. I have to decide whether I can risk flirting back to one of
my friends, if it's witty enough, or how good a spider pcture has to be to
deserve a personal response from Mistress Stacie.

Friends, it isn't a good place to be. There's no one here I dislike--Richard
didn't stay in my killfile more than 24 hours.

I don't want to say "you." But this *situation* is backing me into a corner.
There's no need for apology from anyone, but for pity's sake dial it back a
notch.

If I have to shut it down cold, I will, but that will hurt. It'll hurt me,
and it'll hurt my friends. It'll take a lot of the fun out of afp. I'd be
sad, really hurt, if no one ever chased me around with another spider, or
made reference to whips & chains & world domination. I've been here four
years, and it's *me*.

I don't want to be neutered, but could we maybe use our "indoor voices" for
a while? Please?

I won't be leaving, at least not for good, but if forced, I can lurk. I'm
sorry, I just didn't know how else to end this.

Stacie

I'm not replying to more than a tiny fraction of your post, since it's
not directly relevant to me, but here I just wanted to point out that
the decision shouldn't be whether to respond or not; your decision
should be whether to reply on-group or by email. Maybe that'll make
things easier for you.

Sounds like a plan. As long as I remain Trusted Lieutenant in the
long-term quest for at least continental domination.

Oh, good, a chance to direct this toward a discussion of valid e-mail
addresses....

I'm going to name names. I've tried to e-mail Arthur a few times, and
haven't been able to.

That said, valid point. I have been doing that to some extent, but it hasn't
been quite enough. Some of it stayed public because a certain number of
people were quite obviously having a ball with it.

Of course. We also need a public plan to throw them off the scent.

So officially we cease operations. I'll pass the word on to the troops.

Oh, right.

We sent them home.

Northern or southern? I recommend the former - the latter is mostly
ocean.
If we take USA first, then Canada, and expand simultaneously to
Australia and Europe (Britain's nearly ours anyway), we can infiltrate
Asia from both directions. That leaves just Africa, Latin America, and
some itty-bitty islands. And Antarctica - not very useful, unless
Lieutenant Torak wants to test his tactical nukes there.
Ladies and gentlemen - we have practically won.
(And I'll take China, if you don't mind...)
